“The Sweeney” is a film adaption of the original police drama that ran as a television series in the U.K. during the 1970s. Think “Miami Vice” — but instead of Crockett and Tubbs, “The Sweeney” featured Flying Squad detectives Jack Regan and George Carter donning pea coats. And while the Miami duo cruised around in topless Ferraris, the British duo chased bad guys through London in Ford Granadas, Consul GTs, and Cortinas.
Today, the battle between cops and robbers hasn’t changed much, but the same can’t be said about cars. The Ford sedans used by the Flying Squad detectives in the 70’s give way to the fast and nimble 2012 Ford Focus ST hatch, which is powered by an EcoBoost 2.0-liter, 250-hp, turbocharged, inline-four engine. Ford secretly delivered a secret batch of its hot hatch to the movie set. But unlike the bright orange Focus ST that’s been making its way through the auto show circuit and press photos, the movie version is sporting a more incognito black paint job with blacked-out rims. It also appears to riding a few inches lower to the ground. A few of the ST’s siblings will also be making a guest appearance including the Ford Mondeo, Galaxy, and Transit.
In all, it sounds like the making of a great movie especially for all you Ford fanatics out there. The film premieres in September 2012, but we’re more excited about the actual car rolling into U.S. showrooms before then.
