For years, the Cobra Jet Mustang has been synonymous with out-of-the-box straight-line performance. Now, the latest iteration of the Cobra Jet has been unveiled at the Performance Racing Industry (PRI) show in Orlando, Fla. For the 2013 model year, Ford Racing improves the chassis of the limited-edition turn-key race car, reducing weight and upgrading components for better performance at the track.

Still designed to NHRA Stock and Super Stock specifications, the 2013 Cobra Jet comes with one of two available engines, which include a naturally-aspirated 5.0-liter TiVCT V-8 with CNC-ported heads, high-lift cams, Cobra Jet induction system, and low-drag accessory drive system; and a supercharged version of that engine utilizing a 2.9-liter Whipple supercharger, 10-rib supercharger drive system, and CNC port-matched manifold and heads.

Lightweight body parts offer better weight distribution, while an electric power steering system reduces parasitic horsepower loss. The roll cage has been redesigned for 2013, and is optimized for safety and chassis rigidity. The brake pedal ratio has also been changed, now providing better pedal modulation and increased stopping power. In addition, Ford Racing says the Cobra Jet’s revised suspension geometry delivers faster and more consistent 60-foot times.

“The 5.0-liter has all the attributes to make a world-class drag racing engine, and is ideal for the Cobra Jet,” said Ford Racing business manager George Goddu in a release. “Both the naturally-aspirated and supercharged engines will be competitive as delivered.”

According to Ford Racing, MSRP for the naturally-aspirated Cobra Jet will be approximately $86,000, while the supercharged option will start at $93,000. Additional options and pricing are expected to be announced January of next year. Cobra Jet production will be limited to only 50 units, and the turn-key racer will be offered through Ford dealers on a first-come-first-served basis. But if you can’t stomach the cost of an actual Cobra Jet, or if you happen to be buyer number 51, Ford Racing offers all the components needed to convert your Mustang to Cobra Jet specs through its performance parts catalog.

Cobra Jet production will begin in Flat Rock, Mich. in June 2012, and the 50 Cobra Jet models will all be painted one color. That color is up to you, as Ford Racing is leaving the decision to a vote. The three color options are classic white, silver, and black. You can vote on which color you think should grace the next Cobra Jet at Ford Racing’s website through December 31.
