Ford Explorer Tops 100K Sales for 2011

How fast have been the sales of the fastest-growing midsize utility vehicle in America? Consider: The Ford Explorer recently saw calendar-year sales cross the six-figure mark for the first time since 2007—more than two months before the calendar year even ended.

The lineup includes the 2012 Ford Explorer, which is now on sale with an available EcoBoost engine that delivers best-in-class fuel economy. In fact, thanks to the use of turbocharging and other powertrain technologies, the advanced 2.0-liter I4 engine helps the Explorer achieve EPA ratings of 20 mpg city/28 mpg highway/23 mpg combined. That’s without sacrificing power, too, because the same high-efficiency engine makes a robust 240 hp and 270 lb.-ft. of torque.

“We know many consumers have a strong need for utility vehicles, even as rising gas prices made fuel efficiency one of their top concerns,” said Erich Merkle, Ford sales analyst. “Ford answered our customers’ needs in the utility segment by offering its all-new 2.0-liter EcoBoost engine in the 2012 Ford Explorer and Edge.”

• SYNC with MyTouch Ford—The company’s ultimate in-car connectivity and infotainment system
• Intelligent 4WD with Terrain Management System—With four selectable driving modes
• Top safety ratings—Chosen as a “Top Safety Pick” by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety
• High levels of capability—With a max tow rating of 5,000 lbs.
