Ford Focus EcoNetic Diesel to Get 65-Plus MPG, Would it Work Here?

Following the announcement earlier this spring about an EcoNetic version of the new Focus going on sale in the UK, Ford has announced it will roll out several new green-themed models at the upcoming Frankfurt Motor Show.

The Focus EcoNetic will be able to go 100 kilometers on 3.4 liters of fuel, which Ford is claiming will make it the most fuel-efficient C-segment vehicle available and roughly translates to more than 65 mpg in U.S. measurements. The Fiesta ekes out an even more frugal 3.3 liters per 100 kilometers. Both are powered by a specially-tuned 1.6-liter Duratorq turbodiesel engine producing 95 horsepower in the Fiesta and 105 in the Focus. Of course, both cars would likely be very slow, in the 12-second 0-60 range at best.

The Focus has a six-speed manual transmission, whereas the lighter Fiesta uses a five-speed manual. Both transmissions have been optimized with a low-friction design, with the Focus’ six-speed also utilizing a specially-formulated low-friction oil to further enhance efficiency.

In an additional incremental step to optimize fuel economy as much as possible, the Focus EcoNetic also features active grille shutters to improve aerodynamics under certain conditions. Ford claims the shutters are a class first for the European market. However, the U.S.-market Focus SFE employ a similar technology.

Applying some of the technology learned from Ford’s hybrid experience, the Fiesta and Focus EcoNetic models feature a “smart” alternator that increases output under braking or deceleration to convert kinetic energy into electric power that is stored back in the battery. The system also continually monitors the charge status of the battery for optimized electric power utilization.

In addition to the diesel engine, Ford will showcase the 1.0-liter three-cylinder EcoBoost engine in Frankfurt, as well as the 1.6-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder. The EcoNetic brand umbrella will encompass all the company’s economy-oriented models and powertrains, including electric vehicles, hybrids, and diesels.

As of now, all these models are confirmed for Europe only. But would you be interested in seeing more high-efficiency options in Ford’s North American lineup? Or is the SFE model enough, and you say “Bring on the ST and RS!”
