Ford Launches Update, Sync Reads Texts to More Users

Ford wants drivers to stay focused on the road, and is now extending Sync’s capability of reading text messages out loud to first generation Sync users with a new update.

Message Access Profile (MAP) Bluetooth support, which enables compatible smartphones to stream and read text messages out loud, is now made available to owners of 2011 and early release 2012 Ford vehicles with the first generation of the in-car infotainment system. This broadens the amount of Sync users who can now benefit from the hands-free program, which is custom-made for message streaming in automobiles.

Previously exclusive to all 2011 Ford vehicles equipped with MyFord Touch and second-generation Sync platforms, MAP can also be used to transmit emails, SMS, and MMS, between compatible mobile phones and Sync. However, only incoming text messages can be read aloud. According to Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG), MAP is still a fairly new concept, which could mean it may only be a matter of time before drivers could transmit outgoing text messages the same way drivers can make voice-activated telephone calls.

“Texting is becoming a ubiquitous part of our day, so it stands to reason the remote message access profile is an essential addition for handsets, automobiles, headsets and aftermarket car kits,” said Michael Foley, Ph.D., executive director Bluetooth SIG.
