The Ford Motor Company enjoyed a nine-percent year-over-year sales gain in September 2011, with sales volume supported primarily by Ford trucks and SUVs. Sales of Ford cars suffered last month, and luxury brand Lincoln saw sales of almost all its models slip compared to a year prior.

Ford – 168,101 sales, up 14.4 percent

Ford’s sales figures were led by SUVs and trucks. The F-Series truck line remained the brand’s top seller, with sales up 14.7 percent versus September 2010, for a total of 54,410 trucks sold. The largest sales jump was posted by the Explorer, with 11,336 sales tallying a massive 203.6 percent year-over-year leap. The Explorer’s overall volume, however, was eclipsed by the Edge (down 8.9 percent to 11,680 vehicles) as well as the Escape (up 41.3 percent to 20,225 sales).

As for cars, Ford’s Fusion sedan enjoyed a healthy 22.6-percent sales gain to finish the month at 19,510 cars sold, while Fiesta volumes rose 30.1 percent year-over-year to 3967 vehicles. The results were less impressive for other Ford cars: Focus sales fell 24.1 percent to 10,309 cars, Mustang sales dropped 12.3 percent to 5054 units, and Taurus volume sank 38.3 percent to 4305.

Oddly, the antiquated Ranger compact pickup saw an 87.5-percent year-over-year sales leap, to 7154 sales in September. Although production has ceased, the Ford Crown Victoria is still drawing fleet customers: September sales were up 53.6 percent to 3013 units, thanks in part to taxi and police customers stockpiling the last available examples of the Crown Vic.

Lincoln – 7018 sales, down 6.6 percent

Sales results for luxury brand Lincoln were poor overall, with only two models reporting sales increases compared to September 2010. The MKZ sedan sold 1936 vehicles, a year-over-year gain of 54.4 percent, and the Navigator SUV saw sales inch up 9.5 percent to 660 vehicles. However, MKS sales dropped 17.5 percent to 1073 cars, sales of the MKX crossover fell 14.7 percent to 2267, and sales of the MKT dragged down 29.1 percent to 373 vehicles.
