Ford has given us one more reason to be jealous of Europe, as evidenced by these spy shots of the next-gen Mondeo wagon. The Mondeo is Ford’s mid-size player in the European market, and is distantly related to the current U.S.-market Ford Fusion. A new model is set to arrive in 2013, and is also planned to form the basis for the next-generation Fusion in America. Knowing that the makings of the next Ford Fusion lie beneath the skin of this test mule, perhaps a blue-oval-badged wagon is in our future
after all.

| Seen here being unloaded off a trailer, the Mondeo prototype appears to be conducting winter testing in the Alps. Though the front end is well-camouflaged, the styling looks like it might draw inspiration from the EVOS concept that bowed in Frankfurt last month. We last spotted a Mondeo sedan in early April on a transport truck, but we can see that this test mule is fully capable of being propelled under its own power. Motivating the car could be one of several EcoBoost gasoline I-4 engines currently available in Europe, but a turbodiesel powerplant is also a possibility. |  |
Whether or not we actually get a wagon version of the next-gen Fusion, this car at least previews what Ford has in store for other markets abroad. If Ford gives its SVT division a version of the next Fusion sedan to play with and tweak, then maybe we’ll stop groaning about not getting the wagon here.
