When you imagine something built entirely of LEGOs, you probably don’t picture it coming down an automotive assembly line. Well, we’re about to blow your mind! This Ford Explorer was built at the Chicago Assembly Plant, but it is unlike the other Explorers built there – it is comprised of more than 380,000 LEGO bricks, weighs 2,654 pounds, and has a 768-pound interior aluminum base. It took more than 2,500 man-hours to create.
The special Explorer is the byproduct of a long-term alliance between Ford and the 150-acre LEGOLAND Florida theme park, which will feature the Ford Driving School, where kids can get behind the wheel and drive (top speed of the electric vehicles: 3 mph). The LEGO Explorer will be on display at the school, which will have a Ford Junior Driving School for wee ones age 3 to 5, while the regular school will be for age 6 to 12. A video with driving instructions and safety tips will cover the basics, such as safety belts and the difference between the accelerator and brake, as well as stoplights and stop signs. Florida-area Ford dealers came up with the idea of the school.
LEGOLAND Florida will open October 15, and will have more than 50 family-focused rides, shows and attractions. And you can’t call something LEGOLAND without having LEGOs in abundance – the exhibits use more than 50 million LEGO bricks. If you’ve got a kid age 2 to 12, this place will be golden.
